Frequently Asked Questions

Common questions and answers about this tool

Word Counter FAQ

How accurate is the word count?

Very accurate. The counter splits text by whitespace and filters out empty strings. It counts words the same way most word processors do. However, hyphenated words are counted as one word.

Does the character count include spaces?

We provide both counts: total characters (including spaces) and characters without spaces. The "Characters" count includes everything. The "Characters (no spaces)" count excludes all whitespace.

How is reading time calculated?

Reading time is based on 200 words per minute, which is the average adult reading speed for comprehension. The actual speed varies by person and content complexity. Formula: Words ÷ 200 = Minutes.

Why is speaking time different from reading time?

People speak slower than they read. Average speaking speed is about 130 words per minute. This is useful for preparing speeches or presentations where you need to know how long your text will take to deliver.

What counts as a sentence?

The counter identifies sentences by looking for text segments ending with period (.), exclamation mark (!), or question mark (?). Multiple punctuation marks (like "...") are treated as a single sentence ending.

Can I use this for SEO keyword analysis?

Yes! The "Top 10 Words" feature shows word frequency, which is useful for SEO. However, for comprehensive SEO analysis, use dedicated SEO tools. This counter helps identify your most-used keywords and potential over-optimization.

Why are short words excluded from the top words list?

Words shorter than 4 characters are filtered out because they're usually articles (a, the), prepositions (in, on, at), or other common words that don't provide meaningful keyword analysis. This helps focus on substantial content words.
